The art and science of strategic decision making
For the first time in Egypt and in partnership with the Professional Development Foundation (PDF); London business school is having its first open enrollment program in “Strategic Execution.”
The program is targeting Business executives who constantly make important strategic decisions and take strategic actions with lasting consequences in an uncertain world.
Introduction
Every year, companies invest an extraordinary amount of time, money and effort into the creation of the perfect strategic plan. A well-planned road map for success. Yet few companies actually reach their destination. A recent study of companies with over $500M in revenue found that more than 66% set targets that exceeded 9% real growth, yet less than one company in 10 achieved this level of success. In fact, of the companies analyzed only 13% were able to achieve 5.5% compound annual growth rates while providing shareholder returns in excess of their cost of capital. Clearly, there is a significant roadblock between the strategic plans these companies develop and the results they achieve.
OUTLINE
Don't you find it surprising that most executives are self-trained in strategic execution? In this session, we will explore answers to such questions as (1) what are criteria for judging decision quality facing risk, (2) what is the relationship between a decision, its execution and its outcome, (3) what about accountability for strategic decisions made and their execution under uncertainty. We will discover that strategic decision-making and strategic execution are critical skills at which we can all become proficient.
The process of decision making is about fostering effective communication. Effective communication will lead to the development of a shared understanding of the decision problem. The ultimate goal of a good process of decision making is achieving joint commitment to action. This is the pre-requisite for effective strategic execution and links directly to creativity, experimentation, innovation. Decision making involves developing and choosing among strategic alternatives and new business initiatives. Execution addresses how to make these new initiatives happen effectively.
At the end of the seminar you will be able to…
- Understand that good strategic decision-making is a process at which we can all become proficient.
- Structure strategic execution problems.
- Facing uncertainty, understand what the relevant criteria of execution quality are.
- Determine accountability for decisions made and their execution facing uncertainty.
